Nick Saban is successful. Very successful. And to some, that makes him an easy target. But we should praise his accomplishments and his style of play before piling on.

Augusta National Makes The News Again

By now, you have probably already heard about Bergen Record reporter Tara Sullivan getting the Heisman stiff arm from Masters security when she tried to enter the locker room with a group of reporters. They were following Jean Van De Velde Trophy nominee Rory McIlroy to get some quotes. They were simply doing their job. The twitterverse exploded with outrage from fellow reporters at the treatment of their colleague. And who can blame them? There was much frustration on their part as to how Sullivan was treated, but it also brought up the history of Augusta National.


There are plenty of outlets where you can read about the not-so brilliant history of Augusta, so I'm not going to re-hash that. I'm more concerned about how it can be changed.

Major League Baseball begins officially tomorrow. No more spring training. No more playing in front of retirees in Florida and Arizona. And there might not be a team more looking forward to this than the Baltimore Orioles.

You could practically say the Orioles 2011 season started August 2nd, 2010. That was the day Buck Showalter took the reigns of a team that was worse than a doormat for the American League.

The Case for Derrick Rose as MVP

If you haven't paid attention to the NBA in a few weeks, sports writers and MVP voter-type people are salivating over Derrick Rose as the presumptive NBA MVP. Common sense says it looks like a good thing. He's averaging just south of 25 points per game, about eight assists per game, and is the best player on a team that has had two players miss significant time with injuries. But does that tell the whole story?

The Much Improved Philadelphia 76ers

Throw this around in your head. Since the All-Star break, the Philadelphia 76ers are 10-5, which is the next best record behind the Bulls. Oh yeah, the 76ers are also in second place in the Atlantic Division, in front of (gasp) the New York Knicks! Now that I have your attention, let's take a deeper look.

One thing NBA general managers always worry about when putting teams together is team chemistry. That was a concern some Miami Heat fans had as they worry putting together a team of three high profile superstars plus some D-Leaguers. Now, you could say that it's a team of two high profile superstars, Chris Bosh, and some other pieces. The same could be said for the new-look Knicks.
